Bill Lee

Bill Lee has had a love/hate relationship with baseball but a love affair with the fans and most of the players he played with. The man they called Spaceman pitched for 10 years in Boston, going 94–68 with a 3.64 ERA. He pitched in the World Series and got burned with a slow-pitch softball pitch—an Eephus—that Tony Perez clobbered for a two-run homer that got the Reds back into Game 7 of the 1975 World Series.

“His father is here tonight, and he says Bill Lee is not as far out in space as everyone says he is,” Curt Gowdy said as Perez came up. “He says, ‘Sometimes I don’t understand him, but he’s a very sensitive, intelligent young man who’s a lot of fun to be around.’”

Then came one of the most infamous pitches in Red Sox history. He struck Perez out with it in Game 2, and Perez’s teammates laughed at him.

This time, no one was laughing.

“He almost looked like he was waiting for it,” Tony Kubek said on NBC. “You wonder if [Johnny] Bench had something to do with it, down on second relaying signs.”

Perez said it was a hitch in Lee’s delivery that told him what was coming.

The Reds won the game and the World Series.
